Nordic and Baltic countries hold debate on gender issues

30 January 2008

An ETF workshop held on 28 and 29 January in Vilnius brought together 24 women from Nordic and Baltic states to exchange gender equality best practices in transport. The meeting was part of a broader EU-funded project on “Mobilizing trade union action on gender equality in the transport industry”.

Participants from Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Sweden shared valuable information based on their experience and regional specificities. While Nordic countries focused on particular gender issues such a pay gap and parental leave, representatives from the Baltic states highlighted that the poor quality of their jobs and workplace reflected the way their economies were run.

Guest speakers included Algirdas Sysas, Member of Lithuanian Parliament and Chairperson of the Social Affairs and Employment Committee, and Aldona Jasinskiene, Chairperson of the Lithuanian Trade Union Confederation Solidarumas.

Unions also analysed ways to tackle gender discrimination and promote gender equality measures, and examined women’s role in the collective bargaining process. Finally, key areas for action and future cooperation were identified.
