Strategic concept

The project builds on past experiences with a view to reaching far in the future.

Attempting, on one hand, to measure the degree of adaptability of the industry to the specific needs of female transport workers, the project will focus on:

1) identifying concrete workplace related problems;

2) reviewing existing tools, instruments, measures to support gender equality, at European and national levels, be it Community Acquis, ETF projects or workplace activities developed by ETF affiliates;

3) working out priorities and best ways for unions to address gender equality problems, by making use of all tools and experience.

Moreover, the project will kick off activities meant to gain a life of their own beyond the project end-date:

1) a gender equality network in the urban transport sector to foster exchange of experience and force positive workplace changes;

2) a research on women working in ports, to cover aspects such as mapping the gender composition of the workforce in ports and services associated with port activity (direct and indirect employment, including logistic hubs); strategic job categories and their distribution by gender; types of employment and job quality.

The project outcome will stay at the core of the ETF gender equality plan for 2009 – 2013.
