About the Railways Section
The ITF’s Railway Workers’ Section is one of ITF’s eight industrial sections. Its membership includes 137 unions worldwide, representing 1,245,315 members.
The section’s membership has grown modestly over the past four years, despite substantial job losses in the global railway industry. The affiliation of a number of significant new unions and some increase in declared membership has offset significant reductions in membership elsewhere.
The ITF Railway Workers’ Section is structured on the basis of a section conference and a section steering committee (See this page >>), supported by a transport policy sub-committee. The section conference elects a chair and three vice-chairs.
Section Chair: Øystein Aslaksen (Norsk Lokomotivmannsforbund, Norway)
Section Vice-Chair: Julio Sosa (La Fraternidad, Argentina)
Section Vice-Chair: CA Rajasridhar (AIRF, India)
Section Vice-Chair: Didier Le Reste (CGT Cheminots, France)
Women's Representative: Jane Barrett (SATAWU, South Africa)
The section is supported at the ITF secretariat by Section Secretary, Mac Urata and Assistant Secretary Eddie Dickson.
The section also appoints working groups to focus on particular issues. For example, the ITF and Eurotunnel agreed in January 1998 to the formal establishment of a Eurotunnel Consultative Committee, with its primary focus being health and safety matters.
